
The Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Statistical Association held its annual banquet on a sunny April 17, 2025, at the Schenley Plaza Oval Tent. The event brought together over 90 local statisticians for a vibrant evening of networking and celebration. Attendees included faculty and students from Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Statistics and Data Science, the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Statistics and Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science, local industry professionals, and even a dedicated high school math teacher.
The event kicked off with the poster award competition, which more than twenty graduate students participated. The winners were Ergan Shang (CMU) and Weiqiong Huang (Pitt Stat), recognized for their outstanding research presentations. Ergan was also the Miheala Serban Poster Award Winner.
Dr. Andrew Moore delivered a passionate keynote address on the pros and cons of full automation in safety-critical systems such as healthcare, disaster response, and national security, and exchange with the audience on responsible implementation.
The Chapter also celebrated the accomplishments of its 2025 Students of the Year: Mateo Dulce Rubio (CMU), Weiqiong Huang (Pitt Stat), and Na Bo (Pitt Biostat). The 2025 Statistician of the Year honor was awarded to Professor Aaditya Ramdas from CMU for his significant contributions to the field.
The evening concluded with the election of Dr. Jiebiao Wang as President-Elect for the 2025–2026 term.
